About Dr. Jo

After graduating from the University of California Medical School, San Francisco in 1970 and completing a rotating internship at Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Oakland, California, in 1971 Dr. Jo (Bessie Jo Tillman, MD) practiced medicine in Redding California for 32 years.

Her career began as one of Mercy Medical Center’s first full time emergency room physicians. Following her 7 ½ years in the emergency room she worked 2 ½ years at a walk-in care facility.

She loved helping people in those facilities, but eventually began to feel that much more could be done to prevent much of the suffering from unnecessary degeneration of the body. And so her quest began for digging out the cause of the disease process rather than treating the symptoms.

Modern medicine was and is fantastic for trauma treatment but still falls short in prevention of degenerative diseases such as heart disease, hardening of the arteries, diabetes, allergies, osteoporosis, autoimmune disorders, and even cancer.

Initially her search for answers to reversal of disease processes led her into nutrition. At a nutrition seminar at the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation (PPNF) in 1984 she wondered why no one had ever taught her this information about how our diets (what we put in our mouths) so profoundly affect our health status. She immediately began using these nutrition principles at home and in her practice. They were so successful that they became the foundation upon which she built her wellness practice for her private practice and personal life. She eventually served on the Board of PPNF from 1986 to 1996, serving as president of the Board from 1991 to 1995.

All the wonderful nutrition research done by Dr. Price, Pottenger and Page led Dr. Jo to write Dr. Jo’s Natural Healing Cookbook, an eating plan guide with lots of healthy recipes that continues to help many people to a high level of wellness.

Over the years she received more medical training from and enjoyed association in the American College for Advancement in Medicine, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, the American Association for Health Freedom, the Great Lakes Academy of Clinical Medicine and the American Academy of Neural Therapy. She currently serves on the advisory boards of the International Foundation for Nutrition and Health and Sundance DX.

She also has been a community education instructor for Shasta College, and a speaker at various community events with some radio and television appearances. She currently serves on the faculty of Shasta Bible College.

Married since 1964 to her loving and supportive husband Pat, they have two wonderful daughters and are currently enjoying 6 feisty grandchildren. She enjoys fellowship at her community church and serving on the leadership team of an Aglow International city lighthouse.
